Subscribing to a Calendar

The SCHS web site uses a calendar file format called iCalendar (.ics), which is an open standard supported by an increasing number of calendar applications. For example, Apple's iCal (Mac),Mozilla's Sunbird (Mac/Windows), Windows Calendar (Windows Vista) and Google Calendar can all subscribe to an .ics calendar and receive updates automatically on a configurable basis.

The benefit of subscribing to the iCalendar feed allows you to view the SCHS Calendar within your favorite calendar application. You can subscribe to the SCHS General Calendar and the SCHS Sports Calendars. For the sports calendar you can filter out the events to just the one's your interested in and then use the link provided below the calendar.

You will need to read the documentation for which ever program you use for specific instructions on how to subscribe. However in each case you will need the url to the iCalendar feed. You can get this url by going to the calendar page to select and copy the "iCalendar Feed URL" below the calendar. You can then paste the link into which ever program you are using.

Programs that support iCalendar

Mac users currently have an advantage and a superior calendaring application. Apple's iCal, which comes bundled with the Mac OS X operating system, was one of the first to very efficiently read and subscribe to iCalendar files. You can use Apple's iCal application to subscribe to a calendar then use Apple's iSync application to synchronize this information with a compatible phone, PDA, or iPod.

Microsoft Windows Vista users can use Windows Calendar which tries to replicate most of the features of Apple's iCal application. However, Microsoft Windows XP is currently lacking an integrated and/or complete calendaring solution like Apple's iCal. This does not mean Windows XP users do not have any options, there are a few applications that will allow you to subscribe to your calendar that we are aware of and we will list them in our recommended order:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2007 now features similar abilities as iCal in terms of subscribing to calendars and synchronizing with portable devices. This is the recommended solution if you working in a Windows environment.
  • Microsoft Works 8 / 2006 (http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/) believe it or not, has a better integrated calendar solution than Microsoft Outlook 2004 in many respects. If you currently own a copy of Microsoft Works 8 (2006), you can subscribe to iCalendar files in the "Works Calendar" and receive regular updates.
  • Sunbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird.html) is a cross-platform calendar project started by The Mozilla Foundation (makers of Firefox and Thunderbird), which allows you to subscribe to iCalendar files and receive updates from our servers. Unfortunately, though, the application is still in it's infancy and is lacking support for synchronization

Both Mac and Windows users can use Google Calendar which is a web-based calendar application that can subscribe to iCalendar files. One of the benefits of using Google Calendar is that it can be accessed from any computer with a web browser.
